Terms of Use
Effective date: September 1, 2026
1. About Cimore
Cimore is a nonprofit public interest research and social impact organization based in California. We conduct research on how people choose to use – and not use – AI, and share insights with the public, professional groups, policymakers, and responsible technology developers.
The Terms of Use ("Terms") below govern your use of this website and the services we offer through it (the "Services").
2. Acceptance of Terms of Use
By accessing our website, taking a survey, joining our community, registering for an event, making a purchase, or donating, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services. Where we present these Terms with a checkbox or an "I agree" button, checking the box or clicking the button confirms your acceptance of the version then posted.
By using the Services, you consent to receive electronic communications from us, including emails related to your account, transactions, community activity, and updates about our programs. You may opt out of non-essential communications at any time by using the unsubscribe link in our emails.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to create a community account, make a purchase, or submit a donation through the Services. Our surveys are open to adults aged 18 and older; because survey responses are anonymous, we are unable to verify respondent age. The Services are not directed to anyone under 18. We reserve the right to refuse or suspend access to the Services at our discretion for conduct that violates these Terms or is otherwise harmful to the community.
4. Our Services
- Human Choice Surveys: voluntary research surveys hosted on SurveyMonkey.
- Research Data and Publications: analyses and insights from Cimore research.
- Community: an online discussion community for members who create an account.
- Events: meetups and workshops with registration handled by Eventbrite.
- Store: merchandise offered through our online shop.
- Donations: once online giving launches, one-time and recurring gifts that support our programs.
5. Community Accounts and Conduct
If you create a community account, you are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for the activity that happens under your account. You agree to treat other members with respect. We may remove content or suspend accounts that harass others, spread spam or malware, impersonate people, violate our terms or otherwise disrupt the community.
6. Surveys and Research Participation
Participation in our research is voluntary, and you may stop at any time. Survey responses are anonymous by design; we do not collect names, email addresses, or IP addresses with responses through our surveys. How we handle, protect, and share survey data is described in our Data Sharing Policy, which is part of these Terms for research participants.
7. Donations
Cimore is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is classified as a public charity under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). Our exemption is effective as of July 22, 2026, and contributions made on or after that date are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Cimore does not provide tax advice; please consult your tax advisor regarding your particular situation. Donations are non-refundable. If you believe a donation was made in error or in the wrong amount, contact us within 30 days at engage@cimore.org and we will work with you to correct it.
8. Store, Products, and Orders
Prices in our store are listed in U.S. dollars and may change without notice. Product descriptions and images are provided for convenience; minor variations in color, placement, and finish may occur. We may limit quantities, refuse an order, or cancel an order if a product is unavailable or a listing contains an error, in which case you will be refunded. Profits from the store support Cimore’s mission. Purchases from our store are not charitable contributions and are not tax-deductible.
No returns for size, color, or change of mind. Please review the size chart on the product page before ordering, because we cannot accept returns or exchanges for a change of mind or for an item ordered in the wrong size or color.
Damaged, defective, or incorrect items. If your order arrives damaged, misprinted, defective, or is not what you ordered, contact us at engage@cimore.org within 30 days of delivery with your order number and a photograph of the item. We will arrange a replacement or a refund at no cost to you.
Lost shipments. If your order has not arrived within 30 days of its estimated delivery date, contact us and we will investigate and either replace or refund the order.
Order changes and cancellations. Orders move into production quickly. If you need to change or cancel an order, contact us as soon as possible; once production has begun we may not be able to stop it.
Shipping and delivery. Most items take a few business days to produce before they ship. Delivery windows shown at checkout are carrier estimates rather than guarantees. You will receive tracking information by email once your order is on its way.
Delivery address and unclaimed parcels. You are responsible for the accuracy of the shipping address you provide. If a parcel is returned to us because the address was incorrect or incomplete, or because it went unclaimed, we can reship it once you cover the cost of reshipment.
International orders. We ship worldwide. Customs duties, import taxes, and handling fees are set by the destination country, are not included in the price you pay at checkout, and are the responsibility of the recipient.
How refunds are issued. Approved refunds are returned to the original payment method. Your bank or card issuer may take several business days to post the credit after we issue it. If a refund has not appeared after that time, check with your card issuer or bank, and then contact us at engage@cimore.org.
Review invitations. If you tick the box at checkout asking to be invited, about two weeks after your order ships we will send one email to the address you gave at checkout, inviting you to rate and review the items you bought. Leaving a review is optional. If you would rather not receive review invitations, reply to that email or write to us at engage@cimore.org and we will stop sending them. Reviews you submit may be shown publicly on our product pages along with your name. We read every review before it is published and may decline to publish reviews that are abusive, off-topic, or not about the product.
9. Events
Event registration is processed by Eventbrite under its own terms and policies. Some events may be recorded. We announce recording at the start of any session that is being recorded. Recordings are used for Cimore’s internal purposes, such as program improvement and research. We will not publish or share a recording that identifies you without your consent. We may reschedule or cancel events; paid registrations for a canceled event will be refunded.
10. Intellectual Property
The Cimore name, mark, logo, website content, research reports, and other materials are owned by Cimore or our licensors and are protected by copyright and trademark law. You may share and reference our published materials with attribution for non-commercial purposes. Any other use requires our written permission. For clarity, "non-commercial purposes" means personal, educational, journalistic, or research use that is not primarily intended for commercial advantage or monetary compensation.
11. Your Content
By posting or submitting content in our community or virtual event chatrooms, you grant Cimore a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, display, reproduce, and distribute that content in connection with operating the Services. Survey responses are governed by the Data Sharing Policy, not this section.
12. Prohibited Uses
- Breaking any applicable law or regulation
- Attempting to gain unauthorized access to the Services or other users’ accounts
- Uploading malware or interfering with the operation of the Services
- Scraping, harvesting, or bulk-collecting content or personal information
- Misrepresenting your identity or affiliation
- Using the Services to harass, abuse, or harm others
- Using the Services, Cimore’s website, or any content available through the Services to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models without Cimore’s prior written permission
13. Copyright Infringement and DMCA Notices
We respect intellectual property rights. If you believe that content posted on the Services infringes your copyright, you may send a notice to our designated agent with the following information:
- A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or a person authorized to act on their behalf
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing, with information reasonably sufficient for us to locate it
- Your contact information, including address, telephone number, and email
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner
Send notices to: Compliance Department, legal@cimore.org, Cimore, 2108 N Street #16999, Sacramento, CA 95816.
Upon receiving a valid notice, we will remove or disable access to the material and notify the user who posted it. The user may submit a counter-notification if they believe the material was removed in error. A counter-notification must include: (a) your physical or electronic signature; (b) identification of the material that was removed and the location where it appeared before removal; (c) a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification; and (d) your name, address, telephone number, a statement that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice, and a statement consenting to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district in which your address is located, or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which Cimore may be found.
If we receive a valid counter-notification, we will forward it to the person who sent the original notice and restore the material in 10 to 14 business days, unless that person notifies us that they have filed an action seeking a court order to restrain the allegedly infringing activity.
We will terminate the accounts of users who are repeat infringers.
14. Third-Party Services and Links
The Services rely on third-party providers, including SurveyMonkey (surveys), Google Forms (Contact Us and email list), Eventbrite (event registration), and payment processors for purchases and donations. Third-party services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies, and Cimore is not responsible for their practices. Links to other websites are provided for convenience and are not endorsements.
15. Disclaimers
The Services and all content are provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Our research findings are provided for general information and do not constitute professional, legal, or financial advice.
16. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Cimore and its directors, officers, employees, and volunteers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Services. Our total liability for any claim will not exceed the amount you paid to Cimore in connection with the transaction giving rise to the claim, or $100 if you paid nothing. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.
17. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold Cimore harmless from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from your violation of these Terms or misuse of the Services.
18. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you have a concern, please contact us first at engage@cimore.org; most issues can be resolved informally. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Sacramento County, California.
19. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
20. Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and the Data Sharing Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Cimore regarding your use of the Services and supersede any prior agreements or understandings on the subject.
21. Waiver
Our failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not waive our right to enforce that provision or any other provision in the future.
22. Assignment
You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent. Cimore may assign these Terms in connection with a merger, reorganization, or transfer of substantially all of its assets.
23. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time as our Services grow. The current version, with its effective date, will always be posted on this page. Continued use of the Services after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
